Our Mission: Effective, just and humane responses to crime and its causes. Our Organization: The John Howard Society of Sault Ste. Marie and District is a charitable, non-profit organization, which has been serving our community for over 50 years. We are committed to developing and providing programs that are evidence based in reducing risk factors that can lead to crime. The services we provide help to reduce the social, economic and personal costs of crime. We assist those that have been in conflict with the law as well as those that face risk factors that can lead to crime, which include: poverty, unemployment, addiction, homelessness, abuse and low education. Our focus is on prevention, intervention, and reintegration with an overall objective of enhancing community safety. We are seeking enthusiastic and experienced board members with expertise in one or more of the following areas; - Mental Health - Addictions - Legal - Board Governance Our board meets 10 times (15-30 hours) per year on a monthly basis plus committee work as needed. Involvement at both the board meetings and committees is required. Workload at the board level is not usually onerous. We welcome your interest in the John Howard Society of Sault Ste. Friends of the Library operate a used book store downstairs at the main branch of the library. We also do outside sales and fundraisers. We are in need of sales help and book sorters on an ongoing basis. We are looking for someone to sell antique and collectible books. We also need a volunteer interested in fundraising, advertising and promotion. For July 14-16 we will need people to assist with our outdoor book sale and flea market in front of the Centennial library.
