Duties: The Volunteer Activity Assistant will help the TR/Activity staff to organize, assist at, and implement various games, groups, special events, etc., for the elderly residents at the Long Term Care Nursing Home (MKK) and the Supportive Housing Facility (KOT). Will also help with portering / escorting of residents to and from groups.

Skills Expected: Physically able to push small up to large sizes of wheelchairs for varying distances. Some knowledge of dementia/Alzheimer Disease, or if have experience working with the elderly or individuals with disabilities, an asset. Good communication and listening skills. Kind, patient, caring, and compassionate individuals. Flexible, organized, good with problem solving.

Orientation: Once the entire process to become a volunteer has been completed by the Manager of Program & Support Services, volunteers will be scheduled to attend the next group activity. The TR/Activity staff will be present and provide orientation/guidance at all groups.

Training: Given policies and procedures required by the MOH-LTC. Given tour of facilities. Volunteers will be provided training and direction by TR/Activity staff at all groups.

Benefits: Volunteers will be helping our LTC residents be active in their leisure. Job/school references can be obtained once the required number of 50 approved/successful volunteer hours have been accumulated and recorded.

Comments: Provision of a negative police check, including the vulnerable sector section, are required for all volunteers 18 years of age and older, as per the MOH-LTC Act. Groups are normally held at 10:30 a.m., 2 p.m., and 6:30 p.m., Monday through Sunday, year round at the long term care nursing home. Monday - Friday, 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. at the Supportive Housing facility.
